The Moment of Truth

One plane or two plane? Swing and release the hands or turn and rotate the body? Golf can definitely be a game of what I call, ‘information overload’! In some circles of instruction, we like to refer to ‘The Moment of Truth’, also known as our position at impact. One thing all tour players do well, despite their swing methodology, they get into a powerful impact position.

Cole Hamels Tiger Woods Peyton Manning

Even by watching other professional athletes, we notice similarities in motion, specifically at the point of impact or release. Notice Cole’s, Tiger’s, and Peyton’s back foot? Before and during impact/release all athletes have their back heel off the ground. This is a result of an athletic motion towards a specific target. Where are you at impact? Do you find yourself falling backwards?

As the season approaches, one thing you might want to pay attention to, is the simple awareness of finishing all your swings facing the target with your back foot pointing toe down. If you can’t accomplish that with your full swing, shorten and slow your swing down until you can do it. Keep your thoughts simple as you head into the upcoming season!
