"Do's & Don'ts"

I want you to conduct a little experiment. I want you to sit down and relax for just one moment.
Now, listen carefully, don’t think
about how you are breathing. How did you do? I will assume most of you like myself, immediately paid attention to our
breathing pattern! Our brain doesn’t like to process “don’t”.
How
does this apply to us when we are on the golf course? As you look at the par 3 pictured above, what “do’s & don’ts” come
to your mind? How many of you have told yourself, “don’t go left” as you’re
standing on the tee? Even though you are telling yourself “don’t go left”,
that is the very thing that your brain is fixed on, just like your breathing pattern! Instead, start training yourself
to focus on a specific target. “I want to hit the right edge of the green” is a more ideal thought process
as you stand on the tee. Keep your thoughts on what you want to “do”, not what you “don’t” want
to do!
This concept may sound easy at first, but I would encourage you to pay attention to your thought process as you
head out to the links this spring! If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email me at mikedeiters@pga.com.
