The gray fox is prevalent throughout the United States, except for the colder northwestern states of Washington, Idaho and Montana. The gray fox lives in wooded areas, using hollow logs and trees for dens. They are primarily nocturnal but often abroad in daytime. February is their peak breeding season, with litters usually born from mid-March to May.
