The Shaker Trace Seed Nursery in Miami Whitewater Forest is the largest publicly-held native seed nursery in Ohio. On Saturday, July 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., visitors will enjoy a guided tour through this unique seed nursery and will get to see firsthand where seeds used in land restoration are grown, harvested, processed and stored.
Shaker Trace Seed Nursery was first developed in 1992 when native seed was collected from remnant sites within 100 miles of Hamilton County. The nursery’s primary purpose is to produce native prairie and wetland seed for a restoration project of several hundred acres at Miami Whitewater Forest. Seed producing plants continue to be hand-raised thanks to a group of dedicated Hamilton County Park District Volunteers and staff. The nursery now has over 200 different species of native plants, the seed of which is used in prairie and wetland restoration efforts throughout the Park District.
Activities for visitors include a guided tour of the nursery, free seed packets and light refreshments. For more information about Shaker Trace Nursery’s land restoration project or about the guided tour, please contact the Hamilton County Park District at (513) 521-7275.
