“Arthritis” Tips For Our Golfers
During club fitting and lesson sessions I have seen many players that are struggling and having to deal with the pain of arthritis. This pain and aggravation can sometimes even get to the point that it may end a golfers career. Many of these players know about and may have tried arthritic grips, however there are several other things that may help combat this ailment. Some surveys have shown that about 50% of the people over the age of 60 suffer from arthritis. If you live long enough you’re going to get some form of it. By age 75, almost everyone will develop osteoarthritis in some part of the body.
I would like to pass along some tips I have come across over the years that I recommend to my students and customers:
- If you haven’t, try the larger arthritic grips that are easier to hold onto without having to close the hand as tightly
- Try some of the cushioned grips, like the chamois air cushion in order to dampen the vibration and shock of impact
- Be sure to take care of joints that have been injured before since they are strong candidates for arthritis
- Seek out therapist that are able to offer treatment for strength loss in the hands
- For added strength and power I have seen players with arthritis have better success going to the 10 finger baseball grip
- Try a lower compression golf ball like the new Wilson 50, a 50 compression ball that has great distance
- If you can walk when playing use a pull cart, or think about playing with less than the usual 14 clubs
- Contact a local Arthritis Foundation or check out the www.arthritis.org website for help
- Try a “Shock-Stopper glove by Foot Joy and the Bionic golf glove by Hillerich & Bradsby which have both earned ease-of-use commendations form the Arthritis Foundation
- Try a shorter swing with less turn (many times no distance is loss), however if distance is loss try a lighter more flexible shaft
- Consider a long putter that is easier on the body
- Eat a well balanced diet and avoid smoking
- If possible walk every day and keep your body weight down
- If things get real tough tee up those fairway shots also (we know it is against the rules), but the key is to continue playing and enjoying the game of golf
I hope that these ideas and tips help you continue to enjoy this great game.
Good Luck & Good Golfing
