The Hamilton County Park District is accepting prepaid orders for the native trees and shrubs listed below. You can order online below. Trees are $22.00 each and shrubs are $18.00 each. The trees are locally grown from regionally collected seed. To jump start growth, aid with rapid root establishment and increase transplant success, the tree is raised in a special gallon container lined with “spin-out.” Trees and shrubs are approximately three years old. Planting in the fall allows time for the trees to establish a root system before spring. Specific information about many trees and shrubs can be obtained from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Forestry Division.
The order deadline is September 19. Supplies are limited. Call Nature’s Niche for information (513) 923-3665. For mail order, send completed form (download 2008 tree form here) and payment to: Native Tree Sale, Hamilton County Park District, 10245 Winton Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45231. Charge orders may be faxed to (513) 923-3926. Make checks payable to the Hamilton County Park District. Order online below.
Note: To help ensure tree survival, all orders must be picked up on September 27 or 28. While great efforts have been made to ensure a healthy stock, due to variations in soils, planting and care, the Hamilton County Park District cannot guarantee the survival of plants. Tree availability subject to change.
The Benefits of Trees - Source: TreesAreGood.com
Trees alter the environment in which we live by moderating climate, improving air quality, conserving water and harboring wildlife. Climate control is obtained by moderating the effects of sun, wind and rain. Radiant energy from the sun is absorbed or deflected by leaves on deciduous trees in the summer and is only filtered by branches of deciduous trees in the winter. We are cooler when we stand in the shade of trees and are not exposed to direct sunlight. In winter, we value the sun's radiant energy.
Air quality can be improved through the use of trees, shrubs and turf. Leaves filter the air we breathe by removing dust and other particulates. Leaves absorb carbon dioxide from the air to form carbohydrates that are used in the plant's structure and function. In this process, leaves also absorb other air pollutants - such as ozone, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide - and produce oxygen.
By planting trees and shrubs, we return to a more natural, less artificial environment, helping to restore harmony to the urban environment.
