Great Parks' Hops & Hyzers Event Celebrates Disc Golf
Discs will be flying over the fairways and landing with the satisfying rattle against basket chains at the Woodland Mound disc golf course, during the annual Hops & Hyzers disc golf tournament from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, September 27. Hops & Hyzers includes not only fun rounds of disc golf but also family-friendly games and entertainment amidst the trails and spectacular views of Woodland Mound.
The Hops & Hyzers tournament is particularly welcoming for beginner to intermediate level players. Tee time registration is $35/player and includes a round of play, swag bag and a complimentary beverage. Signups are available at GreatParks.org.
The term hyzer refers to a type of throw in disc golf. And hops, of course, refers to beer. HighGrain Brewing is the presenting sponsor for this year’s event and will have beer available for purchase for people ages 21 and older.
Great Parks is in the process of renovating all four of its disc golf courses. Over the last three years, Great Parks upgraded 18-hole courses at Woodland Mound and Winton Woods. Great Parks is currently upgrading the 9-hole course at Miami Whitewater Forest to a full 18 holes, with work to finish this fall. Great Parks’ fourth course, with 9 holes at Embshoff Woods, will be the final course to be upgraded, with work that should be complete by next spring. Renovations were planned from input by disc golfers, and have included new concrete pads, baskets and signs, plus alternating basket locations to allow for different layouts and more hours of enjoyment.
Disc golf course renovations are being completed under the Great Parks 2021-2030 Park and Facility Master Plan, which has priorities identified by the public and supported by the 0.95-mill levy approved by voters in November 2021.
