A pair of bald eagles is nesting on a tree high above Winton Lake, and Great Parks is offering the opportunity to get a close-up view of activity in the nest through binoculars during viewing sessions planned for the coming weeks. The Great Parks team at Winton Woods saw, from a safe distance, that there appear to be two eaglets that have hatched in the nest, and everyone is eagerly watching to see what will happen next.

Bald eagles in Ohio have been an ongoing success story, as they are no longer on the state and federal endangered species lists. They can often be seen not only at Winton Woods, but also at other Great Parks such as Miami Whitewater Forest, Sharon Woods and Shawnee Lookout. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, bald eagles have exceptional vision that complements their stately appearance and majestic flying ability, and lucky observers can sometimes even glimpse them diving into a lake to catch a fish.

The Great Parks eagle watch takes place in Winton Woods, across Winton Lake from the nest at an appropriate viewing distance. Guests are asked to park in the disc golf parking lot and make the short walk down to Adventure Outpost. Great Parks interpreters will be on site to explain where to look to see the eagles in residence at the lake. The Adventure Outpost site is also an excellent spot to see other wildlife, including turtles, fish, and raptors and smaller birds.

Eagle watch at Winton Woods takes place from 1-3 p.m. on April 19, plus 9-11 a.m. on April 26 and May 2, 9, 17, 23 and 31.
