What:

Great Parks will join in Ohio’s series of regional America 250 celebrations by hosting civic leaders in the planting of a heritage tree at Fernbank Park.

Why:  The tree planting represents Great Parks’ participation in Ohio’s Heritage Trees program for America’s 250th birthday, through which America 250-Ohio will plant a white oak tree in all of Ohio’s 88 counties to honor Ohio’s role in the nation’s founding. America 250-Ohio chose white oaks because they are native to Ohio, grow in many soil types and resist many tree diseases. The trees are intended to represent Ohio’s commitment to conservation.

The tree at Fernbank Park is a burr oak, a type of white oak tree specially selected to represent Ohio’s enduring contributions to the country’s past, present and future. Burr oaks are large native shade trees found throughout much of Ohio. An oak tree’s fruit is the acorn, just as in Great Parks’ logo, and burr oak acorns are some of the largest in the state. Burr oaks can grow up to 80 feet tall or more.

Where:

Fernbank Park, 50 Thornton Ave.

When:

10 a.m. on Friday, April 17

Who:

The heritage tree is being provided by Hamilton County Commissioners. Anticipated guests at this event include Great Parks CEO Todd Palmeter, Board of Park Commissioners President Scott Schuster, state Representative Dani Isaacson, state Senator Catherine Ingram and Hamilton County Clerk Pavan Parikh. The Great Parks Ranger Color Guard will open the ceremony with the presentation of colors.
